Children's Classes (Adult Classes listed below)

pencilsPencil, Charcoal & Chalk Pastel - learning how to draw
Learning how to draw is one of the most requested artistic skills that I teach. And knowing how to draw aids in virtually every other artistic endeavor. This is why I offer this class everyday and it is the primary class that I teach. This introductory class is recommended for the beginner and is designed to increase a student’s visual art skills.  I start from the beginning, using a variety of specialized activities that stimulate the creative process and build confidence in the young artist’s ability to see detail.  Once your child has acquired the skill of seeing detail, he or she will be able to draw.  Inspiration will be taken from still-lifes (man-made and things found in nature), and photos (animals, people, landscapes). All students will have the experience of working in pencil, charcoal and chalk pastel.

acrylicsAcrylic Painting (offered during the summer session or instructed by request during Pencil/Pastel class)
This class is designed to introduce the student to the techniques of acrylic painting. The students will learn about composition, color theory, underpainting, glazing, and texturing.

watercolorWatercolor Painting (offered during the summer session or instructed by request during Pencil/Pastel)
In this class students will learn basic techniques such as: transferring images to watercolor paper, breaking an image down to light and shadow, working wet on wet, dry-brushing, masking out light areas, and spattering. Inspiration will be drawn from photos and still-lifes.

ceramicsCeramics - Clay Hand-building and Sculpting
By learning the basic techniques of pinching, coiling, and slab building students will be able to create clay forms from sketches or from his or her imagination.   The students will be exposed to different decorating techniques and effects including glazing.  This course will cover a wide range of pottery projects that are fun to make and will allow the student to adapt the techniques to their own creative style.  Materials and firing are included in class fee. Class instructor is Amy Palmer.

figureLife Drawing (offered in the summer session)
In this class the focus will be on drawing still-lifes and three dimensional objects instead of  drawing from pictures.  This will  strengthen the students ability to draw perspective and to draw what they see from their vantage point. A variety of objects will be provided to expose the student to different textures, shapes, and proportions.
